                                                        SUMMARY

This paper underscores the significance of international immigration for the demographic
development of the City of New York. It highlights the role international immigration has played
in the creation of the ethnic diversity of the City.

The aim of the paper is to draw attention to the impact the US immigration policy has had on the
increase of the population of NYC. To this end the paper focuses on the periods of intensive
immigration, main immigration routes and the most numerous ethnic communities.

I also interviewed different people who live in New York, and these interviews provided me with
an insight into how legal and illegal aliens feel about living in the City. Some of these immigrants

came from our country while others emigrated from other regions of the world.
Key words: New York, immigration, immigrants (immigration, emigrate), naturalization,
