REZIME

SUMMERY
Paper analyzed results of chlorophylls and total carotenoids as well as morphologycal alterations needles
of Taxus bacata L. (yew) in the Botanical garden, located in immidiate vicinity of the street with heavy traffic
(poluted site) and arboretum of Faculty of Forestry in vicinity of large forest complexs Kosutnjak (control site). The
aim of the study was to established adaptation level of yew in the presence of pollutants as well as possessing
potencial for urban greening. Researsch was conducted in February 2007. Lower Chl b and Chl a+b contents, higher
ratio of Chl a/b and lower ratio of Chl a+b/Tot Carot in yew needles from Botanical garden in comparison with
control site, as well as absence of differences in Chl a and Tot Carot contents between sites, pointed out activated
protecting mechanisms of chlorophyll and photosyntetic aparat and adaptation of this species on urban stress. The
presence of yew visible symptoms damages of needles in Botanical garden which expressed in form chloroses,
apical and marginal necroses, dry needles and branch where result of direct and intensive exposure to motor
vehicle exhaust pollutants. However, yew individuals had more „sound“ needles than damaged. It can be concluted
that studied yew possessess ecological potencials for planting in urban spaces.
