EFFECTS OF DRY OLIVE LEAF EXTRACT ON HUMAN COLON CANCER CELLS

REZIME
Mediteranski naĉin ishrane povezan je sa reĊom pojavom karcinoma kod ljudi. Osnovni sastojak
mediteranske dijete su proizvodi od masline. U ovom radu smo ispitali delovanje ekstrakta suvog lista
masline na ćelije raka debelog creva. Ćelije su tretirane razliĉitim koncentracijama ekstrakta. Broj živih
ćelija posle tretmana je odreĊivan MTT testom i testom bojenjem kristal violetom. Pokazano je da ekstrakt
suvog lista masline znaĉajno spreĉava rast ćelija karcinoma debelog creva.Naĉin umiranja ćelija ispitan je
bojenjem propidijum jodidom i zakljuĉeno je da posle tretmana ekstraktom suvog lista masline ćelije
karcinoma debelog creva umiru apoptozom.

SUMMARY
Mediterranean diet has been shown to protect against cancer. Olive tree products are essential elements of
Mediterranean diet. In this work we investigated the effects of dry olive leaf extract on human colon
cancer cells. Cells were treated with different extract concentration. The number of living cells was
determined by MTT test and crystal violet staining. Dry olive leaf extract significantly inhibited
proliferation of human colon cancer cells. The type of cell death was investigated by propidium iodide
staining and it was concluded that apoptosis was the major mechanism of death of colon cancer cells in
this experiment.
