PHRASAL VERBS

Abstract
Phrasal verbs are combinations of verbs and particles. Particles can be adverbs or prepositions, and
some of them are both. That is why phrasal verbs are complicated for studying. I have researched two
ways of learning phrasal verbs easier. The first way is all about particles and their meanings when
combining with verbs. This method of studying is not very common because there are over 40 particles
with over 300 meanings. Some of those meanings I have processed in this essay. Some particles have
been shown in 3 tables, where they have been divided on the ground of their numeral appearance in
phrasal verbs. From those tables we can clearly see that there are some particles with high percentage of
appearance like up and out, and some with low percentage of appearance like aback and beneath. In this
essay I have also introduced the second way of studying phrasal verbs. With a short research I have
shown that learning phrasal verbs with illustrations turns out to be better than learning definitions by
heart. In my research I had 16 students divided into two groups. One group had to study given phrasal
verbs and their definitions by heart, and the other group had to study phrasal verbs with illustrated
explanations. The second group had better score in the test they did where I wanted to check how well
they have learnt given phrasal verbs. The whole research was done in Tom & Emma School of English so I
thank to teacher Sofia for her help.

Apstrakt
Frazalni glagoli su kombinacije glagola i partikula. Partikuli mogu biti prilozi ili predlozi, a neki od njih su
oba. Zato su frazalni glagoli komplikovani za učenje. Ja sam otkrila dva načina za lakše učenje frazalnih
glagola. Prvi način je o partikulima i njihovim značenjima kada se kombinuju sa glagolima. Ovaj način
učenja nije uobičajen zato što postoji preko 40 partikula sa preko 300 značenja. Neke od tih značenja
sam obradila u ovom radu. Mnogi partikuli su prikazani u 3 tabele, gde su podeljeni na osnovu njihovog
broja pojavljivanja u frazalnim glagolima. Iz tih tabela možemo jasno videti da postoje neki partikuli sa
visokim procentom pojavljivanja, kao up i out,i neki sa veoma niskim procentom pojavljivanja, kao aback
i beneath. U ovom radu takođe sam predstavila drugi način učenja frazalnih glagola. Pomodu kratkog
istraživanja pokazala sam da se učenje frazanlih glagola sa ilustracijama ispostavi kao bolje od učenja
definicija napamet. U mom istraživanju imala sam 16 učenika koji su podeljeni u dve grupe. Jedna grupa
imala je da nauči zadate frazalne glagole i njihove definicije napamet, a druga grupa imala je da nauči
frazalne glagole sa ilustrovanim objašnjenjima. Druga grupa imala je bolji rezultat na testu koji su radili
da bih proverila koliko su naučili zadane frazalne glagole. Celo istraživanje izvedeno je u školi engleskog
jezika Tom&Ema tako da se zahvaljujem nastavnici Sofiji za njenu pomod.
